Three-piece dance music wizards Delphic create their music on laptops in their Manchester flat, but when they take it to the stage it blooms into something much bigger. The addition of live guitar and vocals, augmented by drummer Dan who whales away at two drum pads makes the sound something altogether even more special.
There are no breaks, so it drives along like a DJ set, varying between songs and hypnotic rhythmic interludes. As a live experience it has more in common with the Chemical Brothers than The Kooks so it’s no surprise Tom Rowlands has become a fan.
It’s inevitable with such an outlook and coming from Manchester that Delphic will be compared to New Order/Joy Division. They have something of that band’s collision of ordinary bloke-ness with high end ideas and it’s a heritage they’re happy to acknowledge.
Delphic are a spectacular live machine who are going to release some of the most accessible future-music of the coming months. Is it pop? Is it rock? Is it dance? Who cares, Delphic don’t and nor should we.
